The Satyagraha campaign launched in Colombo Fort in protest against the detention of former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay has been suspended.

The demonstration, which began on June 8 near the Colombo Fort Railway Station, was organised by several opposition political parties. Protesters alleged that Sallay had been subjected to inhumane treatment while in custody and called for action over the matter.

A significant number of opposition politicians and supporters took part in the protest campaign during the past few days.

Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on February 25 in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. He continues to remain in custody under detention orders issued by the court.
