A discussion with fertiliser companies regarding the review of fertiliser distribution for the Yala season and preparations for the importation and distribution of fertiliser for the forthcoming Maha season was held yesterday afternoon (08) at the Presidential Secretariat, under the patronage of Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Namal Karunaratne.

During the meeting, the Secretary to the President inquired into the readiness of fertiliser companies with regard to importation and distribution arrangements, as well as the support required from the Government to facilitate the process.

Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of adhering to a structured timeline for fertiliser importation and distribution to ensure an adequate and uninterrupted supply for farmers during the Maha season.

Attention was also drawn to the need to ensure the timely distribution of fertiliser to farmers at the commencement of the Maha cultivation season in early September, as well as to the impact of fluctuations in global fertiliser prices on import planning.

Taking these factors into consideration, agreement was reached among all parties to develop a comprehensive fertiliser importation plan and to review its progress in early July.

The meeting was attended by Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Janaki Amarathunga, senior officials of the Ministry, Chairman of the State Fertiliser Company B. C. W. Sethuge, Director of CIC Agri Businesses (Pvt) Ltd Sujeewa Wijewira,  Director of New Lanka Commercial Fertilizer Company E. K. Sisira Kumara, Chief Executive Officer of Hayleys Fertilizer Samudra Rajapaksa, Chief Executive Officer of Allied Fertilizer Ranjith Abeysinghe and several other representatives of private sector organisations.
