Sri Lanka is taking swift steps to sign agreements aimed at expanding employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers in Cyprus, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath said.

The Minister made these remarks during a meeting on June 8 with Evagoras Vryonides, the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to Sri Lanka, who is based in New Delhi.

During the discussions, both sides focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding access to the Cypriot job market for Sri Lankan workers.

Mr. Vryonides expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s continued support for Cyprus in international forums. He also highlighted the strong demand for Sri Lankan workers in Cyprus, particularly in sectors such as nursing, tourism and hospitality, agriculture, construction, and maritime industries. According to the High Commissioner, numerous employment opportunities are available for qualified and skilled Sri Lankan professionals in these fields.

The meeting also addressed concerns regarding Social Security Benefits owed to Sri Lankans who previously worked in Cyprus and have since returned home after reaching the age of 65. Minister Herath drew attention to difficulties faced by many affected individuals in accessing these benefits and requested the High Commissioner’s intervention to resolve the issue.

Responding to the Minister’s appeal, Mr. Vryonides assured that he would take prompt action to help address the matter.

The High Commissioner also extended an invitation to Minister Herath to undertake an official visit to Cyprus.

The discussions reflect growing cooperation between Sri Lanka and Cyprus, particularly in the areas of labour mobility, worker welfare, and bilateral engagement.
