Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena was sentenced to a total of 16 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court after being found guilty on four counts of corruption.

The verdict was delivered by Mohamed Mihal, who imposed a sentence of four years of rigorous imprisonment for each of the four charges. The court also ordered Gunawardena to pay a fine of Rs. 600,000

The judgment marks the conclusion of a long-running corruption case pursued by CIABOC concerning alleged abuses of public funds during Gunawardena’s tenure at the Development Lotteries Board.
