Red Alert Issued for Rough Seas and Strong Winds

The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ warning for strong winds and hazardous sea conditions in the waters stretching from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.

According to the advisory, sea areas along this coastal belt are expected to be very rough at times, with wind speeds reaching between 60 and 70 kmph.

The Met Department also stated that sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai via Mullaitivu, as well as from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil through Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, are likely to experience rough conditions accompanied by strong winds of 50 to 60 kmph.

In addition, wave heights of approximately 2.0 to 2.5 metres are expected in the sea areas from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

In view of the adverse conditions, fishing and naval communities have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the affected sea areas until further notice.
