The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has alerted the public to a fraudulent scheme in which scammers are posing as senior police officers through fake WhatsApp accounts to obtain money from unsuspecting individuals.

According to SLCERT, fraudsters are creating counterfeit social media and messaging profiles using the names and photographs of high-ranking police officials. They then contact victims through phone calls, WhatsApp messages.

The scammers reportedly intimidate individuals with false allegations, threats of legal action, or other claims before demanding payments or financial assistance.

SLCERT emphasized that the Sri Lanka Police do not seek money through messaging applications, social media platforms, or personal accounts under any circumstances.

The public has been urged to remain vigilant, avoid transferring funds to anyone claiming to be a police officer through such channels, and verify the authenticity of any suspicious communication.

Authorities have also advised members of the public to report such incidents immediately to the nearest police station or the relevant authorities for further investigation.
