Parliament to Convene from today (09) to (12)

Sri Lanka’s Parliament is scheduled to meet from June 9 to June 12, according to Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera.

The parliamentary agenda for these sittings was decided at the Committee on Parliamentary Business meeting held on June 1 under the chairmanship of Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

According to the schedule, on each sitting day, the period from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. will be allocated for parliamentary business specified under Standing Order 22(1) to 22(6). From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., time will be reserved for Questions for Oral Answers, while the period from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. will be allocated for questions raised under Standing Order 27(2).

On Wednesday, June 10, the time from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. will be specifically reserved for questions directed to the Prime Minister, followed by Questions for Oral Answers from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

On Tuesday, June 9, Parliament will debate and subsequently seek approval for several regulations and orders from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. These include orders under the Stamp Duty (Special Provisions) Act, regulations under the Ports and Airports Development Levy Act, regulations under the Excise (Special Provisions) Act, regulations under the Value Added Tax Act, and a resolution under Standing Order 119.

Thereafter, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., a motion under the Public Security Ordinance is scheduled to be debated and approved.

On Wednesday, June 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Parliament will hold the Second Reading debate on the Telecommunications Levy (Amendment) Bill and the Finance (Amendment) Bill. A motion under the Essential Public Services Act will also be debated and considered for approval.

Following this, from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., an Adjournment Motion brought forward by the Opposition will be taken up for debate.

Parliament is expected to continue its scheduled proceedings through June 12 in accordance with the agenda approved by the Committee on Parliamentary Business.
