Former State Intelligence Director Major General (Retd.) Suresh Sallay, currently held under a detention order, has launched a fast unto death in protest against alleged inhumane treatment while in custody, according to Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader Udaya Gammanpila.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday (6), Gammanpila claimed Sallay had suffered a severe mental breakdown and is refusing food, water, and essential medication. He alleged that the decision was taken after Sallay was subjected to degrading treatment while being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Gammanpila further alleged that Sallay was served a meagre meal consisting of a spoonful of rice and radish curry placed on a newspaper spread on the floor. According to him, the newspaper tore as Sallay attempted to eat, causing the food to fall to the ground, which he said left the former intelligence chief deeply humiliated.

The PHU leader claimed that during a family visit, Sallay broke down in tears and told his son that he would rather die than continue to endure what he described as false accusations and degrading treatment.
