Poson Week will be observed from June 26 to July 2, 2026, commemorating the 2,534th anniversary of the arrival of Arahat Mahinda Thera and his missionary delegation, who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka.
The National Poson Festival will once again be centered around the sacred Buddhist sites of Mihintale, Thanthirimale, and the Atamasthana in Anuradhapura, which hold immense historical and religious significance in the country's Buddhist heritage.
The Poson Committee convened under the patronage of Anuradhapura District Secretary and Poson Committee Chairman Ranjith Wimalasuriya. Among those present were Venerable Ralapanawa Dhammajothi Thera, Chief Incumbent of Lankarama Temple, and Venerable Eethal Wetunu Wewa Gnanathilaka Thera, Acting Chief Custodian of the Atamasthana, along with several other religious and government representatives.
During the meeting, officials revealed that extensive measures have been put in place to ensure the convenience, welfare, and security of the large number of devotees expected to participate in the religious observances.
The public was also urged to join the Poson celebrations with devotion, unity, and a strong sense of Buddhist values, reflecting the spiritual significance of the occasion.
Poson is one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist festivals, marking the introduction of Buddhism to the island and celebrating its enduring cultural and religious legacy.
