A tragic fire that tore through an elders’ home in Anguruwatota, Horana, on Tuesday evening has claimed the lives of 11 residents, while three others remain unaccounted for, according to police.

The blaze broke out at the care facility on the evening of June 3, triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving police officers, firefighters, emergency responders, and local residents.

Authorities stated that 72 elderly residents were housed at the facility when the fire erupted. Rescue teams successfully evacuated 44 occupants without injury, while seven others who sustained injuries were admitted to the Horana District Hospital for treatment.

The fire spread rapidly through sections of the home before being brought under control after an intensive firefighting effort.

Subsequent search operations within the premises led to the discovery of multiple bodies, confirming the death toll at 11. Authorities have warned that the number of fatalities could rise as investigations continue and efforts to locate the remaining missing individuals proceed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators are currently examining the scene to establish how the blaze originated and whether any safety lapses or violations may have contributed to the tragedy.

A magistrate’s inquiry is scheduled to take place today, while the Judicial Medical Officer is expected to submit a report providing further details regarding the victims and the cause of death.
