The CID submitted a further progress report to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court regarding the incident, in which government funds were allegedly misappropriated through fraudulent email communications.
According to investigators, officials who authorized the payments had released funds based on the submitted invoices without raising any queries or seeking clarification regarding the original contract related to the payments.
Upon a request made by the CID, the Magistrate ordered the relevant university to submit a report concerning compact discs (CDs) containing data extracted from a copied server system linked to the transaction under investigation.
The court was also presented with a copy of the post-mortem and death investigation report of Ranga Rajapaksha, an official connected to the case who had been suspended from duty and subjected to an overseas travel ban before reportedly taking his own life.
During the proceedings, the police informed the court that the Attorney General’s Department is expected to make a representation in the matter in the coming days and requested that a date be fixed for that purpose.
The investigation into the alleged cyber fraud remains ongoing.
