The Management Studies and Commerce Students’ Union (MCSU) of the University of Jaffna has strongly denounced the recent vandalism of a Vesak lantern displayed during a Vesak celebration organized at the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

In a statement, the Union called for those responsible for the incident to be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures.

The Union noted that the Vesak programme was organized by Sinhala students with the approval and support of the Students’ Union, while Tamil students also extended their full cooperation to ensure the event’s success. It emphasized that every effort had been made to create an inclusive environment for students to observe the religious and cultural celebration.

The MCSU also expressed concern over attempts to link the incident to the wider Tamil student community, stressing that the actions of a few individuals should not be used to create ethnic divisions or misrepresent an entire group of students.

The Union urged students to act responsibly, avoid spreading unverified information, and allow the relevant authorities to conduct an impartial investigation. It further called on the university community to continue promoting mutual respect, unity, and peaceful coexistence.
