The Ministry of Health (MOH) has issued a public warning over a possible increase in road accidents and drowning incidents during the upcoming Vesak long weekend, urging the public to exercise caution while travelling and participating in recreational activities.

Health authorities noted that the holiday period typically sees a surge in travel and outdoor activities, which can lead to a higher number of accidents on roads and waterways.

The MOH also warned that recent weather conditions and rising water levels in rivers, reservoirs, lakes and other water bodies could significantly increase the risk of drowning incidents. Authorities advised the public to avoid entering swollen rivers and unfamiliar water areas, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

Motorists and pedestrians have been encouraged to strictly follow road safety regulations, remain vigilant while travelling, and avoid reckless driving. Parents and guardians are also advised to closely supervise children near water bodies and during outdoor activities.

The Ministry emphasized that taking simple safety precautions can help prevent injuries and save lives during the festive period. The public is urged to remain alert, prioritize safety, and act responsibly while celebrating Vesak with family and friends.
