The Government of Sri Lanka has officially inaugurated its new High Commission in Wellington, marking a significant milestone in diplomatic relations with New Zealand.

The office was ceremonially declared open on May 28 during the official visit of Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, according to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Herath emphasized that the establishment of the new High Commission would further strengthen the longstanding bilateral ties between the two nations. He noted that the mission would serve as a platform to deepen cooperation in diplomacy, trade, tourism, education, and cultural exchange.

Winston Peters attended the ceremony as the guest of honor, alongside senior officials from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Sri Lankan community in New Zealand.

Reflecting the cultural traditions of both countries, the inauguration ceremony began with Sri Lankan religious observances and traditional Māori blessings, symbolizing friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.

Minister Herath stated that the opening of the High Commission marks the beginning of a new chapter in Sri Lanka–New Zealand relations, paving the way for enhanced diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation.

The newly established High Commission is expected to provide more efficient consular and administrative services to more than 30,000 Sri Lankans residing across New Zealand, while also promoting stronger people-to-people connections and increased collaboration in key sectors including trade, tourism, and higher education.
