Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath was accorded a traditional Māori “Pōwhiri” welcome at New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Tuesday, becoming the first Sri Lankan Foreign Minister to receive the honor during an official visit to New Zealand.

Minister Herath described the ceremonial reception as a significant occasion marking the commencement of his official visit to the country.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister also held discussions with Speaker of the House of Representatives of the New Zealand Parliament, Gerry Brownlee on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, education and parliamentary affairs.

Speaker Brownlee also recalled his official visit to Sri Lanka in July 2024 as head of a party parliamentary delegation.

Minister Herath is currently engaged in a series of official programmes in New Zealand, including the planned opening of Sri Lanka’s new High Commission in Wellington.

The new mission is expected to provide diplomatic and consular services to more than 30,000 Sri Lankans residing in New Zealand.
