The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for a proposal submitted by Ministry of Energy to implement the “Surakimu Lanka” National Energy Security Mission aimed at strengthening energy efficiency and regulating electricity consumption patterns.

The government stated that Sri Lanka’s energy security has been impacted by several factors including heavy dependence on fossil fuels, drought conditions, disruptions to fuel supplies and fluctuations in global fuel prices.

Authorities noted that these challenges have increased pressure on the national economy due to rising fuel import costs.

The government further pointed out that irregular electricity usage patterns have also contributed to the issue and highlighted the importance of shifting electricity consumption toward periods with greater renewable energy generation.

Officials stressed the need to encourage efficient energy consumption through changes in public behaviour and awareness.

The programme is expected to be carried out with the involvement of government institutions, public corporations, statutory bodies, the private sector and the general public.

The initiative will operate under the guidance of the Presidential Secretariat, the Ministry of Energy, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.
