The Attorney General yesterday (25) informed the Supreme Court that steps are being taken to file indictments within a month against former Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon in connection with investigations into the attack on the 2022 GotaGoGama protest site at Galle Face.

The announcement was made when an appeal filed by the Attorney General was taken up before the Supreme Court against a Court of Appeal judgment that nullified a letter sent by the Attorney General to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The letter had directed the CID to name Deshabandu Tennakoon as a suspect in relation to the incident.

The matter was heard before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices A.H.M.D. Nawaz, Achala Wengappuli, and Sampath Wijeratne.

Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath informed court that legal steps are underway to file indictments against Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The case relates to investigations into the violent attack on protesters at the GotaGoGama protest site during the 2022 anti-government demonstrations held at Galle Face, Colombo.
