In a message shared on social media, Weerawansa claimed that he was taken into custody by a special police team.
Earlier, police confirmed that summons had been issued directing the former minister to appear before the Thalangama Police today ( 25) after he reportedly failed to appear yesterday.
According to reports, Weerawansa was summoned in connection with allegations of disrupting activities at the National War Memorial.
A tense situation was reported in Battaramulla on May 18 between police officers and a group led by the former Minister after they allegedly attempted to enter the National War Memorial during rehearsal activities for the Victory Day commemoration ceremony.
Following the incident, police stated that legal action would be taken against the group, including Weerawansa, over allegations of obstructing rehearsal activities and interfering with the duties of officials at the venue.
