According to reports, the incident occurred near the Maradana bridge while the engine was moving from the railway yard towards the train compartments stationed at the Maradana platform.
Railway sources stated that four wheels of the engine had come off the tracks during the incident.
As a result of the derailment, one railway line between Maradana and Colombo Fort has been obstructed, causing disruptions to train operations in the area.
