The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the fever condition reported from several parts of the island has been identified as meningitis, with more than 100 cases detected so far in Deniyaya, Diyatalawa, Kurunegala, and Kandy.

Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Specialist Dr. Anil Jasinghe, said spinal fluid tests conducted on patients had confirmed the condition, noting that the majority of those affected are children.

According to health authorities, symptoms of meningitis include fever, severe headache, vomiting and nausea, stiffness around the neck, and sensitivity to sunlight.

Dr. Jasinghe stated that the disease can spread through close contact, contaminated drinking water, and touch.

Despite the growing number of cases, the Health Ministry urged the public not to panic, stressing that preventive measures can help reduce the spread of the disease.

Health officials advised the public to drink boiled and cooled water, wear face masks, and avoid crowded places where large numbers of people gather.

The Ministry said health authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely while taking necessary measures to control the spread of the disease.
