Among those deported are two well-known underworld figures identified as ‘Mahawatte Chamara’ and ‘Wanathe Kudu Duminda’, both of whom are alleged drug traffickers and subjects of international Red Notices issued at the request of Sri Lankan authorities.
Police stated that the pair were arrested in Dubai during a party. Investigators further allege that ‘Kudu Duminda’ is the suspected mastermind behind the Borella shooting incident that occurred on August 8, 2025, which resulted in two deaths and three injuries.
Following their return, ‘Kudu Duminda’ has been handed over to the Colombo Crime Division for further investigations, while ‘Mahawatte Chamara’ has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for interrogation.
Authorities also confirmed that five close associates of ‘Kudu Duminda’ were among the deported group and are currently under investigation.
In addition to the suspected underworld figures, the majority of the remaining deportees were arrested in Dubai for allegedly recording and circulating footage on social media of missile and drone attacks reportedly carried out by Iran in the UAE.
Police further stated that during their detention in Dubai, authorities confiscated valuables including cash and gold jewellery before the group was deported to Sri Lanka.
Two women were also among those deported. They have since been handed over to relevant local police stations where cases have been filed, and investigations are continuing.
Authorities say inquiries are ongoing into all 21 individuals under multiple specialized police units.
