Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that politics cannot be separated from development, noting that governance decisions directly shape a country’s progress.

“Politics is not something separate from development. It shapes every choice we make in governance. Governance requires balancing economic recovery, social protection, institutional reform, and democratic accountability while responding to the realities faced by people,” she said.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while addressing the 60th anniversary commemoration of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex during her official visit to the United Kingdom.

She highlighted the importance of integrating policy, people-centered development, and institutional strengthening in addressing contemporary global and national challenges.

The event marked six decades of the Institute’s contributions to development research and policy dialogue, bringing together academics, policymakers, and international delegates.
