The 17th National War Heroes’ Day Commemoration was held this afternoon at the War Heroes Memorial in Battaramulla under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, honouring members of the armed forces who sacrificed their lives and served in Sri Lanka’s decades-long conflict.
The annual event, organised by the Ranaviru Seva Authority, brought together families of fallen and disabled war heroes, along with senior defence and public security officials, including commanders of the Tri-Forces, the Inspector General of Police, and other top officials.
This year’s commemoration placed special emphasis on greater participation of war hero families, allowing more relatives to pay tribute to loved ones remembered at the memorial.
Officials present paid respects to fallen service members and acknowledged their contribution to national security and the end of the war, which lasted more than three decades. The ceremony was marked by wreath-laying and moments of remembrance at the national monument dedicated to war heroes.
Authorities said the event continues to serve as a national occasion to honour military personnel who died or were disabled in service, while reaffirming support for their families.
