The southwest monsoon is gradually becoming established over Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology said in its latest forecast.

According to the 36-hour forecast issued at 4.00 p.m. on May 19, 2026, intermittent showers and thundershowers are expected over the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. The Met Department warned that some areas could receive fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm.

Several spells of rain are also likely in the Northern Province and in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts, it said.

In addition, showers or thundershowers may develop in parts of the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.

The Department also cautioned that fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern provinces.

The public has been urged to remain vigilant and take precautions against possible hazards such as sudden strong winds, lightning, and localized heavy rainfall.
