The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning to fishermen and naval communities over rough seas and strong winds expected in several sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours.

According to the latest forecast, wind speeds may increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Authorities said the affected sea areas are likely to become rough at times, while wave heights could rise to between 2.0 and 2.5 metres in waters stretching from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected in several sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, with isolated showers possible elsewhere around the island during the evening or night.

The Department further cautioned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough sea conditions could occur during thundershowers.

Winds around the island are expected to remain southwesterly with general speeds of 30-40 kmph. Other sea areas around the island are expected to remain moderate.
