WHO assembly opens in Geneva with 194 member states in attendance

The 79th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) officially opened yesterday (18) at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, with participation from health ministers and diplomats representing 194 member states.

The assembly was held under the leadership of WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who outlined global health priorities under the theme “One World for Health.”

Dr. Victor Elias Atallah Lajam of the Dominican Republic was elected President of the Assembly.

Addressing the summit, Swiss Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama were among the key speakers at the opening session.

Senior delegations from multiple countries, including Sri Lanka, are attending the global health discussions focusing on health system strengthening and international cooperation.
