Speaking in response to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Deputy Minister stated that fuel restrictions introduced in mid-March 2026 due to the continuing conflict in the Middle East had led to the reintroduction of the QR-based system.
Dr. Fernando noted that the mechanism will remain in operation with the objective of controlling and reducing fuel usage across the country.
He further explained that the measure forms part of the government’s broader strategy to manage fuel supplies amid global uncertainties affecting energy markets.
