Severe lightning advisory issued for several districts

The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for several parts of Sri Lanka, warning of intense weather conditions expected across the island today (18).

The advisory, which remains in effect until 11:30 p.m., places 11 districts under red alert and 14 districts under amber alert. The warning covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Eastern provinces, along with the Kurunegala District.

According to the Department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in several areas after 1:00 p.m. Temporary localized strong winds are also expected during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. �

Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures to minimize the risk of damage and injuries caused by lightning activity. Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking cover under trees or remaining in open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies. �

The Department also warned against using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms. People are further advised to avoid traveling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats, while remaining alert to dangers from fallen trees and downed power lines. �

Disaster management authorities have requested the public to stay updated with official weather advisories and contact local emergency services in case of emergencies.
