The 79th World Health Assembly commenced in Geneva on May 16 and will continue until May 22, bringing together global health leaders and representatives from member states to discuss key international health priorities.

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health and Mass Media, Nalinda Jayatissa, is scheduled to participate in several high-level sessions held alongside the Assembly. The Minister is also expected to address the main plenary session today (May 18).

During the Assembly period, Minister Jayatissa is due to hold bilateral discussions with health ministers from several countries including Bhutan, Thailand, and Bangladesh. He is also expected to engage in discussions with a number of international organizations, including The Nippon Foundation, focusing on strengthening cooperation in the health sector.

In October 2025, Minister Jayatissa was appointed Chair of the 78th Regional Committee Meeting of the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Region. Accordingly, he is representing Sri Lanka at the 79th World Health Assembly both as the country’s Health Minister and as Chair of the regional body representing South and South-East Asian nations.
