The Colombo Grand Mosque has announced that the Hajj festival, one of the most significant religious celebrations observed by Muslims in Sri Lanka, will be celebrated on May 28 this year.

According to reports received from Hilal committees across the island, the new moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dul Hijjah was not sighted in any part of the country on Saturday (May 17), the mosque said in a statement.

As a result, the current Islamic month will complete 30 days, and the first day of Dul Hijjah will commence on May 19.

Under the Islamic calendar, the Hajj festival, also known as Eid al-Adha, falls on the 10th day of the month of Dul Hijjah. Accordingly, the festival will be observed on May 28, the Colombo Grand Mosque confirmed.
