Adverse weather affects over 5,200 people across Sri Lanka

More than 5,200 individuals have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions across Sri Lanka, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

The DMC stated that a total of 5,242 people belonging to 1,574 families in 65 Divisional Secretariat divisions across 14 districts have been impacted by the ongoing heavy rainfall experienced in several parts of the country.

Among the affected areas, Puttalam District has reported the highest number of affected residents, with 1,488 individuals from 543 families impacted by the inclement weather. Authorities said that 162 individuals from 52 families have been relocated to five safe shelters established in the district.

Meanwhile, Colombo District recorded 1,469 affected individuals from 438 families, while Kalutara District reported 1,051 affected individuals from 259 families.

Officials further noted that 192 houses have sustained partial damage due to the heavy rains and related incidents, while one house has been completely destroyed.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions issued by disaster management and weather officials.
