The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has obtained a 90-day detention order to interrogate Osmand Gunasekara, alias ‘Gampaha Osman,’ who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the assassination of notorious underworld figure and organized criminal, Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, popularly known as ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa.’

Gunasekara is accused of conspiracy, aiding and abetting the murder, and supplying the firearms used to execute the crime.

The high-profile assassination took place on February 19, 2025, inside the Colombo No. 05 Magistrate’s Court premises. Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who was being produced before the court by prison authorities, was shot dead by a gunman who managed to infiltrate the courtroom by posing as a professional lawyer.

The 69-year-old suspect was arrested by CCD officials on the night of May 13 during a raid in the Sri Bodhi Road area in Gampaha. Police disclosed that the breakthrough arrest was made based on vital intelligence gathered from other suspects who are currently being held under detention orders in connection with the same case.

According to police investigations, the plot to assassinate Ganemulla Sanjeewa was meticulously orchestrated in collaboration with organized criminals operating from overseas. Gunasekara's primary role in the conspiracy was reportedly to facilitate the hit by providing the necessary weaponry and logistical support to the perpetrators.

During the arrest, law enforcement officers recovered an unlicensed, foreign-manufactured repeater-type firearm, along with 10 rounds of live ammunition and two magazines from the suspect's possession.
