The Supreme Court has sentenced a former Director of the National Institute of Education to six years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of contempt of court over the failure to implement a court order related to the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.

The accused, I.G.S. Premathilaka, was convicted for failing to comply with a Supreme Court directive issued in connection with the examination matter.

The judgment was delivered by a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and two other senior judges.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a fine of Rs. 3 million on the former official.

The court further ordered that an additional one-year prison term would be imposed if the fine is not paid.

The case was filed on allegations that the respondent had deliberately failed to carry out the Supreme Court’s directives concerning the implementation of decisions related to the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, amounting to contempt of court.
