Heavy rain warning issued for several provinces and districts according to the Natural Hazard Early Warning Centre, the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist, although it is expected to gradually move away from the island and weaken over the next 36 hours.
Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are likely at some places in the affected areas.
The warning, issued at 12.30 a.m. on May 14, is valid until 8.30 a.m. on May 15.
The general public has been advised to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the highest rainfall recorded during the 24-hour period from 8.30 a.m. on May 13 to 8.30 a.m. on May 14 was reported from Puttalam, with 256.2 mm of rain received.
