Kesbewa in Colombo recorded the highest rainfall in the country with 204 mm within a 24-hour period, as severe weather conditions continued across several parts of Sri Lanka, according to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre.

Rainfall figures recorded between 8.30 a.m. on May 12 and 6.30 a.m. today (13) also showed high precipitation in Veyangoda (145.5 mm), Gilimale in Ratnapura (121 mm), Wathupitiwala in Gampaha (105.5 mm), Devitura Estate in Galle (102.5 mm), Bandaragama Government Farm in Kalutara (102.5 mm) and Horana (101.5 mm).

Meanwhile, the Centre warned that very heavy showers exceeding 200 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Puttalam, Galle and Matara districts.

Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is also expected in the Northern and North-Central provinces and in the Trincomalee and Kurunegala districts due to the prevailing low-pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.

The advisory, valid until 3.30 p.m. today, urged the public to take precautions against possible damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
