The Department of Meteorology says an atmospheric disturbance over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a low-pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, triggering warnings of continued unsettled weather.

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology said the system was located near 10.1N and 82.5E at the time of the latest assessment.

Due to the system, showery weather conditions are expected to persist across the island, officials said.

The department further warned of strong winds and rough seas in both deep and shallow sea areas around Sri Lanka, as well as in the deeper waters of the Bay of Bengal.

Fishing communities and naval operations have been urged to exercise caution and closely follow updated weather advisories.
