The Department of Irrigation has announced that spill gates of nine major reservoirs, including Lunugamwehera Reservoir and Rajanganaya Reservoir, have been opened due to the prevailing heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.

Director of the Water Management Unit, H.M.P.S.D. Herath, stated that spill gates of five additional medium-scale reservoirs have also been opened as water levels continue to rise.

The Department warned residents living in low-lying areas surrounding the reservoirs and downstream waterways to remain vigilant and exercise caution, as increased water discharge may lead to sudden rises in water levels.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urged the public to follow official updates and safety instructions issued by disaster management and irrigation officials.
