The government has launched a major Rs. 450 million project aimed at encouraging schoolchildren across the island to participate in sports.

As the first phase of the programme, sports equipment worth Rs. 25 million was distributed yesterday (08) at the Department of Sports Development under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage.

During the event, sports equipment was symbolically handed over to three schools representing the islandwide programme. Authorities stated that many more schools are expected to receive sports equipment in the coming stages of the project.

A total allocation of Rs. 450 million has been set aside for the overall initiative. The funds will be used for the development of school playgrounds as well as the provision of sports equipment to schools.

The equipment packages include items required for cricket, rugby, netball, and athletics, including throwing and jumping equipment for track and field events.

The initiative is expected to strengthen school sports and provide greater opportunities for young athletes throughout the country.
