In one of the largest recent operations, the Kollupitiya Police conducted a raid yesterday afternoon (May 6) at a residential complex located on Uttarananda Mawatha in Colombo. During the operation, they arrested 74 Vietnamese nationals, including 41 men and 33 women, aged between 19 and 39 years.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects had allegedly overstayed their visas and were involved in organized online financial scam activities targeting victims through digital platforms. Authorities believe the group had been operating sophisticated cyber-fraud centers from within the premises using Sri Lanka’s telecommunications infrastructure.
In a parallel operation, officers from the Matara District Crime Investigation Bureau carried out another raid at a hotel in the Talalla area of Gandara in the Southern Province. Six additional foreign nationals — identified as five men and one woman — were taken into custody.
According to investigators, the suspects, believed to be Taiwanese and Chinese nationals aged between 25 and 40, had been conducting business activities while residing in Sri Lanka on tourist visas. Police also recovered stocks of illegally imported duty-free cigarettes and uncovered evidence linked to suspicious financial transactions and online operations.
