The Free Lawyers Organization (FLO) has raised serious concerns over irregularities in the Aswesuma welfare program, alleging that significant financial mismanagement occurred during the April 2026 payment cycle.

According to the FLO, a number of beneficiary families received double payments, while others were issued unauthorized “bonus” payments without any legal approval. The group noted that these discrepancies affected a portion of the 1.8 million families registered under the scheme.

The organization estimates that nearly Rs. 500 million has been lost due to weak financial controls and administrative failures. The irregularities are reported to be most prevalent in the districts of Kegalle District, Monaragala District, and Kurunegala District.

The FLO has called for an urgent and independent parliamentary investigation into the management of welfare funds. It warned that repeated lapses in fund distribution point to deeper systemic issues in public financial governance and accountability.
