Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa stated that there is no requirement to remove Finance Ministry Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma over the reported incident involving US$ 2.5 million intended for external debt repayment that was allegedly diverted.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held today (05), Minister Jayatissa said that while various parties have raised concerns, the Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka had taken swift action once the issue was identified.

He noted that complaints were lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team with the approval of the Finance Ministry Secretary.

The Minister further said that internal investigations are currently underway and that four ministry officials have been suspended with the Secretary’s consent.

He emphasized that all steps taken, including external complaints and internal disciplinary measures were carried out with the Secretary’s authorization, noting that such actions could not proceed without his approval.

Addressing claims regarding dual citizenship, Minister Jayatissa rejected allegations that Dr. Suriyapperuma holds dual nationality, stating that he has never been a dual citizen while serving in any official capacity, including as a Member of Parliament or Deputy Minister.

He added that if such claims were valid, legal action could have been pursued, reiterating that the allegations are unfounded.
