Speaking at an event, Sirisena recalled that during his presidency, he had ordered the destruction of narcotics worth millions that had been seized by the PNB.
Acting on recommendations from the bureau, he said Presidential Awards were presented to the officers involved in those operations.
However, he stated that within a short period about one to two weeks after receiving the awards, it emerged that those same officers were allegedly linked to drug traffickers and underworld elements, and were themselves involved in narcotics-related activities.
The former President further highlighted broader concerns regarding corruption and infiltration within law enforcement agencies, stressing the importance of ensuring accountability in Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.
