Special High Court Trial-at-Bar has been appointed to hear the case against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal over an alleged breach of court conditions tied to the controversial Greek bond investment.

Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena approved the request made by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), following Cabraal’s failure to repay Rs. 1.84 billion to the state within the stipulated deadline.

The three-member Trial-at-Bar will comprise High Court Justices Manoj Thalgodapitiya, Udesh Ranatunga, and Buddhika Sri Ragala.

The case originates from a CIABOC probe into the purchase of Greek government bonds during Greece’s financial crisis, which allegedly caused losses exceeding Rs. 1.84 billion. Cabraal had previously been granted conditional bail in December 2025, requiring full repayment within three months—a deadline that lapsed on March 10, 2026, without settlement.

With the conditions unmet, legal proceedings will now continue before the special court.
