Rajapaksha, a resident of Pahala Veerambuwa in Kuliyapitiya, was found dead yesterday (April 30) in the backyard of his home. According to police, his body bore severe injuries, including deep cuts to both legs and his left arm. A blood-stained knife believed to be linked to the incident was discovered near the body.
Police also stated that Rajapaksha’s daughter had seen him carrying a knife and heading toward the rear of the house shortly before the incident.
The deceased, a father of two, was among four officials suspended in connection with the alleged hacking and theft of USD 2.5 million from the Treasury. Investigators had identified him as a key figure in the ongoing probe. He had previously appeared twice before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and had cooperated with investigators.
Following initial inquiries, the body was transported to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital morgue after the matter was reported to the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today.
Police say further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
