The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (29) ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit a progress report on July 8 regarding investigations into an alleged misuse of state funds involving former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake.

Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the complainant, informed court that indictments against the suspects are expected to be filed before the next hearing.

He also stated that consideration is being given to naming Maithree Wickremesinghe, wife of the former President, as a suspect in the case.

The complaint relates to allegations that nearly Rs. 16.9 million in public funds was used for Wickremesinghe to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony in London during an official visit in late 2023.

The overseas trip was reportedly part of a wider state visit to the United States and the United Kingdom with a government-funded delegation.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the CID on August 22, 2025, and remanded until August 26, becoming the first Sri Lankan head of state to be placed in remand custody.

He was later granted bail on three personal bonds of Rs. 5 million each after medical reports were submitted.
