Presidential Commission Begins Coal Deals Probe

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate all previous coal transactions carried out in the country officially commenced its inquiries today ( 27).

The commission has been established at the Hulftsdorp Court Complex, where the investigations are set to be conducted.

The commission is chaired by Gihan Kulatunga, a Justice of the Supreme Court. Aditya Patabendige, a Judge of the Court of Appeal, and Sanjeeva Somaratne, a High Court Judge, have been appointed as the other members of the commission.

The commission was recently appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with full powers vested to examine the legality, transparency, and procedures followed in coal procurement transactions undertaken in the past.

Secretary to the Commission, P. V. Bandulasena, stated that public notices calling for information and details relating to these transactions will be issued in the coming days.

He further noted that individuals and institutions in possession of relevant information will be invited to submit details to assist the commission’s investigations.
