The arrests were made on the night of April 25 during a raid conducted by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau, acting on intelligence information.
According to officials, the suspects had concealed more than 110 kilograms of narcotics inside specially modified false bottoms of their luggage. The bags also contained school supplies and various sweets to avoid suspicion. Each monk was reportedly carrying over 5 kilograms of illegal substances.
Investigations revealed that the group had traveled to Thailand on April 22 using airline tickets provided by a sponsor. While in Thailand, they had allegedly changed into civilian clothing and engaged in various activities. Photos and video footage documenting these actions were discovered on their mobile phones by investigators.
Authorities state that this is the largest drug seizure ever recorded at Katunayake Airport. It is also the first known instance of a group of monks being arrested at the airport in connection with drug trafficking.
The suspects are reported to be young monks from various parts of Sri Lanka, many of whom are pursuing higher education at different institutions.
The arrested individuals are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on April 26 as further investigations continue.
