According to the statement, scammers are using the department’s hotline number, +94 115 226126 (and similar variations such as 0115226126), along with mobile numbers including 0771167739 and 0742756098, to contact unsuspecting individuals and obtain their personal information.
The fraudsters reportedly claim to be registering citizens for a digital identity card or e-NIC, using a mobile application that falsely displays the national emblem to appear legitimate. The department emphasized that this is a scam and that no such registration process is currently being conducted.
In addition, the scammers are said to be directing victims to a fake website resembling the official department site, identified as drpgov-lk.com, in an attempt to collect sensitive data.
The department strongly advises the public not to share personal or financial information over the phone or through suspicious websites. Officials reiterated that they do not request personal details via unsolicited calls or unofficial platforms.
Furthermore, the department confirmed that no registrations are currently being carried out for digital or electronic national identity cards, and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The public is encouraged to exercise caution and verify information through official government channels to avoid falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
