The Ministry of Transport and Highways has announced plans to introduce automated payment systems across the country’s expressways before the end of this year, marking a significant step toward modernizing Sri Lanka’s road infrastructure.

According to Sumudu Rathnayaka, an advisor to the Ministry, the procurement process for the project is expected to commence within the next few weeks. This phase will be crucial in selecting the appropriate technology and service providers needed to implement the system efficiently.

The proposed automated payment system aims to streamline toll collection by reducing the need for manual transactions at expressway toll gates. Officials believe this will significantly minimize traffic congestion, especially during peak travel hours, and enhance the overall driving experience for commuters.

In addition to easing traffic flow, the new system is expected to improve operational efficiency and reduce waiting times, providing a faster and more convenient service for the public.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader efforts to adopt smart transportation solutions and improve the efficiency of national infrastructure. Further details regarding implementation timelines and system features are expected to be released following the completion of the procurement process.
