A new low-floor bus service aimed at prioritising persons with disabilities and individuals with special needs was launched today (April 21, 2026) at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre under the “Clean Sri Lanka” national programme.

The pilot project, introduced to provide safe, comfortable, and reliable transport facilities, was inaugurated under the patronage of Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake.

Ten specially designed low-floor buses have been added to the service, enabling easy access for wheelchair users, visually impaired passengers, and pregnant mothers. Each bus, with a seating capacity of 30 passengers, also includes designated seating for wheelchair users.

The service currently operates on routes from Makumbura to Colombo Fort and Makumbura to Kadawatha, covering major healthcare centres including the National Hospital of Sri Lanka and Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama.

Speaking at the event, Minister Rathnayake described the initiative as a milestone in the country’s transport sector, noting that it is the first time such buses have been introduced for public transport in Sri Lanka. He added that 122 buses of this type are planned to be deployed by the end of the year, with future expansion to cities such as Kandy, Batticaloa, Matara, and Jaffna.

The event also marked the launch of the “LMT GO” mobile application, designed to provide passengers with real-time service information and improve efficiency in public transport services.
